The mint julep is primarily know as the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby. It is made with just Bourbon, sugar and mint leaves and can be quite strong for those who have never had one.
Picture all those prim and proper hats on sideways and backwards after a few of those drinks!
This version adds a little effervescence with the help of some champagne, making this a great holiday drink and it also fits the bill for your New Years celebrations.
How to make a Champagne Mint Julep
Full printable instructions below
- Add the bourbon, superfine sugar, and mint leaves to a glass shaker. Muddle the leaves with a muddler or the end of a wooden spoon for 30 seconds, or until the mint leaves have broken up and the sugar has dissolved.
- Strain the bourbon mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a glass filled with ice. We recommend these champagne glasses.
- Top with champagne and garnish with fresh mint leaves.
TIPS:
- The flavor of Rye in a Mint Julep is lovely, but any bourbon will work.
- Superfine sugar can also be called Caster Sugar or Cocktail Sugar. Another option is to make a simple syrup by combining ½ cup water and ½ cup of sugar in a small saucepan over high heat. Bring it to a boil and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Set aside to cool until ready to use.
- An expensive champagne is not necessary. Prosecco will work just fine. Try to avoid anything too sweet or too dry– the bourbon should be the main flavor component in this drink.
