SIMPLE Yum Yum Sauce

yum yum sauce in a bowl for steak, shrimp, chicken or sushi

Oh, you saucy little thing! We’re about to embark on a tongue-tingling adventure into the world of Yum Yum sauce. If you’ve ever dined at a hibachi restaurant or savored sushi rolls, you’ve probably encountered this creamy, tangy, and slightly mysterious concoction. Yum Yum sauce is that culinary enigma that leaves you dipping, drizzling, and, let’s be honest, daydreaming about its irresistible flavor.

But here’s the catch: it can be a bit finicky. Yum Yum sauce, despite its delectable flavor, can sometimes undergo an unfortunate transformation when exposed to air for extended periods. The culprits behind this unwanted makeover are the ingredients in the sauce, particularly certain components reacting with oxygen.

However, with a bit of know-how and our trusty tips, you can keep your Yum Yum sauce looking as enticing as ever, ensuring it retains its signature creamy white appearance and scrumptious taste.

Saucy History:

Yum Yum Sauce’s journey is like a culinary whirlwind romance – exciting, mysterious, and utterly delicious. While its precise origin remains a subject of debate among food enthusiasts, one thing is certain: Yum Yum Sauce has been wowing taste buds around the globe for decades.

Some food historians trace its roots back to Japanese steakhouses, where skilled chefs dazzle diners with dazzling knife tricks and flaming grill displays. Others believe it has ties to a Japanese seafood sauce called “shrimp sauce.” But, no matter where it started, it’s clear that Yum Yum Sauce has found its way into the hearts of food lovers everywhere.

First Off, What is Yum Yum Sauce Made Of?

  • Creamy mayonnaise: The creamy base that holds it all together.
  • White sugar: Adds just the right amount of sweetness.
  • Rice vinegar: For that tangy zing.
  • Melted butter: A velvety touch that enhances the texture.
  • Paprika: Sprinkled in for a mild, smoky flavor.
  • Garlic powder: To infuse that irresistible garlicky goodness.
  • Onion powder: A hint of oniony charm.
  • Tomato paste: For a subtle tomato-y twist.
  • Cayenne pepper: A pinch of heat (adjust to your taste).
  • Salt and pepper: To season and balance the flavors.
  • Water (if needed): To achieve your desired consistency.

How to Keep Yum Yum Sauce Fresh

  • 1. The Refrigerator’s Your BFF: Once you’ve whipped up a batch of Yum Yum sauce, don’t leave it out in the open like it’s auditioning for a science experiment. Pop that sauce right into the refrigerator to slow down the oxidation process and maintain its creamy allure.
  • 2. Airtight is Right: To prevent any unnecessary contact with oxygen, store your Yum Yum sauce in an airtight container. This will create a protective barrier, ensuring your sauce stays smooth and pristine.
  • 3. Top It Up: If you’re transferring your Yum Yum sauce to a container, make sure it’s filled to the brim. Less air means less chance for oxidation, so keep it topped up and ready for action.
  • 4. Plastic Wrap Protection: For those partial to squeezing their sauce from a plastic bottle, wrap the tip with plastic wrap before screwing on the cap. It’s like giving your sauce a little oxygen-blocking umbrella!
  • 5. Keep It Cool: When serving your Yum Yum sauce, consider placing it on a chilled platter or keeping it nestled next to an ice pack. This not only adds to the presentation but also helps maintain a cooler temperature, reducing the risk of unwelcome browning.
  • 6. Freshen Up: If you’ve got some Yum Yum sauce that’s been sitting around for a while, you can freshen it up by whisking in a bit of cold water. This will help restore its creamy consistency and rid it of any unsightly separation.

What Can I put Yum Yum Sauce on?

Seriously? We agree with Frank’s Hot Sauce: We put that sh** on everything!

  1. Hibachi or Teppanyaki Grilled Meats and Vegetables: Yum Yum Sauce is a staple at hibachi restaurants. It complements the flavors of grilled chicken, steak, shrimp, and assorted vegetables.
  2. Sushi and Sashimi: Sushi night just got saucy!
  3. Fried Rice: Forget plain old fried rice; say hello to Yum Yum Rice!
  4. Seafood: When seafood sees Yum Yum Sauce coming, it starts doing a happy dance.
  5. Poultry: It pairs exceptionally well with chicken dishes, from crispy chicken tenders to grilled chicken skewers.
  6. Vegetable Stir-Fry: Your veggies are tired of the same old stir-fry routine. But when Yum Yum Sauce steps in, it’s like a veggie makeover. Suddenly, broccoli, carrots, and bell peppers are wearing creamy evening gowns
  7. Burgers and Sandwiches: Burgers and sandwiches, hold onto your buns!
  8. Dipping Sauce: It’s a fantastic dip for french fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings, and other finger foods.
  9. Salads: Don’t knock it ’til you try it!

Description

Yum Yum sauce, also known as white sauce or shrimp sauce, is a popular condiment often served in Japanese hibachi-style restaurants. It’s a creamy and slightly sweet sauce with a mild tangy flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Cup Mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons Tomato Paste
  • 1 tablespoon Melted Butter
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • ½ teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 pinch Cayenne Pepper
  • ¼ cup Water

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the mayonnaise, white sugar, and rice vinegar. Mix well until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Add the melted butter, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, tomato paste, and cayenne pepper. Mix until all the ingredients are well incorporated.
  3. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with salt, pepper, and additional cayenne pepper if you want it spicier.
  4. If the sauce is too thick, you can thin it out by adding a little water until you reach your desired consistency.
  5. Refrigerate the Yum Yum sauce for at least an hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
  6. Serve as a dipping sauce for grilled meats, seafood, vegetables, or sushi rolls.

Notes

The number of servings for Yum Yum sauce can vary depending on how generously you use it. Typically, this recipe makes approximately 1 to 1.5 cups of sauce, which is enough for about 8 to 12 servings as a dipping sauce or drizzle. If you’re using it as a condiment, it can stretch even further. Adjust the quantity based on your needs.

The ingredients differ from what the instructions say. Did not list rice vinegar or onion powder, luckily I had both.
